Architect-led solar PV system design for a UK new build
Design service

Solar system design services for UK new builds and custom builds

Architect-led solar PV design from RIBA Stage 2. 3D panel layout, SAP/HEM compliance modelling, FHS-compliant sizing, full Building Control pack. Single deliverable to your architect or developer team.

Quick answer

Solar system design covers everything before installation: array sizing, 3D layout, SAP/HEM compliance modelling, inverter and battery specification, and the Building Control compliance pack. We deliver it as a single Stage 2-4 architect-coordinated package or as a standalone design-only commission.

What our design service includes

  1. 1Plot or scheme assessment. Drawings review (DWG, PDF, SKP), ground floor area calculation, roof orientation analysis, shading study using satellite imagery and adjacent building data.
  2. 2Array sizing. FHS 40% rule minimum plus a recommended over-size (typically 15-30% above minimum) based on household demand profile, EV expectation and battery plan.
  3. 33D solar PV design. Panel placement on the roof model, annual generation analysis using PVsyst, monthly generation profile, sun-path overlay, shading impact at solstices.
  4. 4SAP 10.3 and HEM modelling. Dual-route Part L 2026 compliance modelling. DER vs TER calculation, EPC band projection, recommendations to improve fabric performance where the headroom is marginal.
  5. 5Inverter and battery specification. Hybrid inverter sized to the array and future battery; battery capacity recommendation aligned to household load profile and tariff plan; ASHP electrical loading coordination.
  6. 6Building Control compliance pack. Submission-ready documentation for the Approved Inspector or LABC route. Includes SAP/HEM file, panel and inverter data sheets, BBA certificate references, mounting hardware specification.

RIBA stages and the right engagement point

When you engage us during your build project materially affects what we can do for you:

RIBA StageDecisions still openWhat we can do
2 — Concept DesignRoof geometry, glazing ratio, plot orientationInfluence architectural decisions for optimal PV
3 — Spatial CoordinationM&E layout, inverter location, service routingCoordinate PV with the rest of building services
4 — Technical DesignPanel make and model, mounting hardware specSpecify the system within the existing design
5 — ManufacturingInstallation programme onlyLimited optimisation — system must fit what's already designed

For self-builders we recommend engaging at Stage 2 if possible — the cost of design coordination is no different but the optimisation upside is meaningfully larger.

Custom solar systems for non-standard projects

Standard 3-bed semis with south-facing pitched roofs are straightforward — but most architect-led projects aren\'t standard. We have designed solar systems for: contemporary flat-roof self-builds with ballasted arrays; AONB replacement dwellings using BIPV slate; modular off-site MMC homes with factory pre-fit; passive house specifications above FHS minimum; mixed-use developments with shared communal arrays; and Conservation Area listed-curtilage infill plots. The methodology is the same — the constraints are different.

For volume housebuilders, our house-type design service is amortised across plot count. We design the system once for each house type in your portfolio; you build to the same specification across hundreds or thousands of plots. Per-plot design cost falls from £450 on a 50-plot first installation to ~£180 on a 500-plot framework.

Tools and outputs

Our design package uses industry-standard tools: PVsyst for production modelling and shading analysis; OpenSolar for fast 3D plot-level design; SketchUp for architectural visualisation handed back to your architect; Elmhurst Design SAP and the BRE HEM engine for compliance modelling. Outputs to clients: PDF design report, 3D model in SKP and DWG, PVsyst report, SAP/HEM models, complete Building Control submission pack.

Solar system design for volume new-build programmes

Per-plot pricing locked at procurement. Factory pre-fit on panelised roof cassettes. SAP/HEM modelling for every house type included. NHBC, LABC, Premier and Buildmark warranty-accepted workmanship. 20-year insurance-backed system warranty. We work with developers from 50 plots to 5,000+ across multi-site frameworks — agreed pricing, agreed programme, agreed warranty stack.

For self-builders and architects

Solar system design for one-off custom builds

Engagement from RIBA Stage 2. PV sizing collaborative with the architect. SAP/HEM modelling that gives the architect freedom on glazing ratios and roof geometry. Building Control submission pack ready for the Approved Inspector. 0% VAT on new-build dwellings. Staged invoicing aligned to your self-build mortgage drawdowns. We work with custom-build buyers across England, Wales and Scotland.

How this fits into the FHS compliance pathway

Every FHS-compliant new build must pass three regulatory gates. Solar system design fits primarily into the second gate — design-stage Part L compliance — but has knock-on implications for Building Control sign-off and post-completion warranty:

  1. 1
Planning permission Most solar PV on new dwellings is consented within the dwelling\'s primary planning consent. Conservation Areas, Article 4 directions and listed-curtilage plots require additional planning consideration — we handle the planning evidence required for these.
  2. 2
Building Control — Part L compliance SAP 10.3 or HEM compliance modelling demonstrating Dwelling Emission Rate ≤ Target Emission Rate. PV specification, ASHP capacity, fabric U-values and air permeability all entered into the modelling. We provide the full compliance file ready for the Approved Inspector.
  3. 3
Post-completion — warranty & EPC MCS certificate, EPC, monitoring app onboarding and 20-year insurance-backed workmanship warranty. NHBC, LABC, Premier and Buildmark all accept our installation specification without query — important if you\'re relying on a structural warranty for buyer mortgageability.

Solar system design FAQ

What does solar system design include?
Our solar system design service covers: (1) plot or scheme assessment from drawings; (2) array sizing to the FHS 40% rule plus a recommended over-size; (3) 3D solar PV design showing panel layout on the roof with shading analysis; (4) SAP 10.3 and HEM compliance modelling; (5) inverter and battery sizing aligned to expected household load; (6) full Building Control compliance pack ready for the Approved Inspector. Delivered as a single deliverable to the architect or developer.
When in the build programme should solar design start?
Optimal is RIBA Stage 2 (Concept Design) — early enough to influence roof geometry, glazing ratio and plot orientation. Stage 3 (Spatial Coordination) is the latest comfortable engagement point. Past Stage 4 we can still deliver compliant design but you lose the option to optimise architectural decisions for solar. For volume housebuilders, we engage at house-type design stage rather than per-plot.
How much does solar system design cost?
For self-build projects: £680-£1,800 depending on complexity, included in our turnkey design+install package. For volume housebuilder house-type designs: amortised across plot count (typically £450/plot for a 50-plot first installation, dropping to ~£180/plot for 500+ plot frameworks). Design-only engagements (where the client appoints a separate installer) are available at £1,200-£3,000 per house type.
Do you provide 3D solar panel design?
Yes — every project includes a 3D model showing panel placement on the roof with annual generation analysis. We use OpenSolar and PVsyst for production modelling and SketchUp for the 3D visualisation that goes to clients. Architects can request the model in SKP or DWG format for integration with their own design package.
What's the difference between design and installation?
Design covers everything before installation begins: sizing, modelling, compliance documentation, procurement spec. Installation is the on-site work plus commissioning, MCS certification and warranty handover. We deliver both as a single turnkey package (most common), or design-only as a standalone service for clients with existing installer relationships.
